Migrating Legacy & Proprietary Databases to PostgreSQL with credativ-pg-migrator
Tuesday, April 21 at 11:20–12:05
European organizations and companies are increasingly re-evaluating proprietary database dependencies as digital sovereignty becomes critical. This talk serves as a pragmatic field guide for migrating from legacy or vendor-locked databases (Oracle, MS SQL, Sybase ASE, Db2, SQL Anywhere) to PostgreSQL. Drawing from years of hands-on experience in heterogeneous migrations, we will explore a comprehensive decision framework for successful transitions. The session compares offline strategies (dump/restore, ETL, bulk COPY) against online, near-zero-downtime approaches, focusing on how to design reversible cutovers that minimize operational risk.
We will explain the main features of credativ-pg-migrator, our open source migration solution and discuss practical data validation techniques to guarantee your data is migrated perfectly, going beyond simple row counts. We will discuss our lessons learned over the past year, including insights from the latest large-scale migration projects.
