Migration from DB2 in a Large Public Setting: Lessons learned

Date: 2017-10-26
Time: 09:30–10:20
Room: Baltic I
Level: Intermediate

A big migration project from DB2 on z/OS to Postgres was presented two years ago at PGConf.EU. At that time, we had evaluated alternatives and made a Proof of Concept. After a lot work and testing, the migration finally happened successfully in July 2017.

This talk will give an update on the approaches explored during the preparation, including the special properties of DB2 and how they were transferred to PostgreSQL as well as other differences between the systems. We will explain the tools and methods used for migrating the large database and verifying results. This includes the open source db2fce compatibility extension developed during this project for making the migration from DB2 to PostgreSQL easier.

A large group of developers had to migrate applications in at least four languages to the new system, having to learn about important differences between two major SQL databases. We supported them in finding and resolving issues that involved sorting differences, date representation gotchas, algorithmic approaches, performance problems and JDBC connection settings.
