Schedule - PGConf.EU 2017

Virtualising PostgreSQL

Date: 2017-10-25
Time: 16:20–17:10
Room: Baltic I
Level: Intermediate

Brace yourselves for journey of migrating our databases from one Linux distribution to another, while upgrading PostgreSQL versions and virtualising machines our database are running on. We even managed to move databases across continents - although only some, not all of them. All of that while maintaining production workload and ensuring regulatory needs are met.

We have over 30 databases at Mapp Digital. Our systems grew together with company; unfortunately we also acquired a bit of technical debt over the time. Aligning with changing business needs we decided to change our environment and way of working.

To allow for smother cooperation with the cloud we decided to virtualise our databases. At the same time we wanted to unify (especially on one operating system and database setup) and automatize as much of configuration as possible, allowing for parametrisation depending on hardware and database size. This makes experimentation and introducing new services much easier.

Our journey was not easy (we even discovered PostgreSQL bug along the way) but it was worth it. Even though we haven't reached our goal we can see it closer and much more clearly.
