Conference Schedule - PGConf.EU 2022

A deeper look into PostgreSQL Indexes - PostgreSQL Indexing Internals

Date: 2022-10-27
Time: 13:40–14:30
Room: Berlin 2+3
Level: Beginner

We have observed many people making several mistakes in choosing an appropriate index. To optimize a query, the default B-tree index or a multi-column is considered. PostgreSQL supports a wide variety of indexes. While some of them are common in almost all the databases, there are some types of indexes that are more specific to PostgreSQL.

In this talk, we shall cover some of the generally unknown Indexes that can give a great performance boost. This talk covers the internals of a wide variety of PostgreSQL Indexes such as

  1. B-Tree Indexes and how it can support pattern searches
  2. HASH Indexes and when are they helpful
  3. BRIN Indexes that could be very tiny in size but helpful when the data is sequential. We shall also see how does setting fillfactor help here !
  4. Some more Indexes such as BLOOM, GiST, GIN, SP-GiST, Covering Indexes, etc will be discussed in detail with appropriate examples.

By the end of this talk, you should have a detailed understanding of all possible Index types in PostgreSQL.
