I have been part of the PostgreSQL Community for nearly 30 years. I believe passionately in the software we produce, but just as importantly, in the sense of family and inclusiveness that prevails throughout our community. I have the privilege of working every day alongside people who have become some of my closest friends, some of whom I've known for almost as long as I've been part of this incredible group, and some for just a year or two.
I recognise the importance of corporate involvement in the project, and I've tried to put that belief into practice - first during over 15 years at EDB, and now at pgEdge, where I've been able to relicence our products under the PostgreSQL Licence and build a growing team of community contributors. Some of my closest friends in this community work for our competitors, and in some cases own or run those companies. Despite being in competition, we remain friends and continue to work together for the good of PostgreSQL. To me, that spirit is what makes this project unique.
I have served for a number of years as Secretary of the board of PostgreSQL Europe. During that time, my work has fallen into three main areas:
Conferences. I have helped organise our events with a focus on maintaining the sense of family and intimacy that attendees tell us time and again they value. As we grow, preserving that character takes deliberate effort, and I'm committed to ensuring it continues.
Legal and contractual work. I have updated and maintained our sponsorship and training contracts, working with our legal counsel to ensure they are fair, effective, and up to date. I have also led efforts to protect our identity, including taking legal measures to ensure that the PostgreSQL community can clearly recognise the work of PostgreSQL Europe and distinguish it from that of other organisations.
Coordination with other PostgreSQL organisations. I have liaised with the leaders of other PostgreSQL non-profit organisations around the world to coordinate our efforts, share best practices, and ensure that we retain our individuality and our distinctly European character.
If re-elected, my priorities for the coming term will include:
I commit to the members that I will continue to work towards the betterment of the PostgreSQL Community in Europe, and to ensure that it remains open to all individual and corporate contributors in a fair, balanced, and impartial way.
